Given :

food can last 6 days for 72 athletes ..

To find :

Number of more days it can last if 18 athletes are absent.

Solution

Athletes left = total athletes - number of athletes absent.

72 - 18 = 54

We know that, it is in Inverse variation i.e The number of days increases with decrease in number of athletes ..

We know that in inverse variation..

x_1 y_1 = x_2 y_2

in our case,

\begin{tabular}{ |c| c|}  \cline{1 - 2}  \sf  Athletes(x)&Days(y)  \\  \cline{1 - 2}  x_{1} = 72& y_{1} = 6  \\ x_{2} = 54& y_{2} =  ?  \\  \cline{1 - 2} \end{tabular}

by putting values

72 × 6 = 54 × y2

432 = 54 × y2

y2 = 432/54

y2 = 8

therefore , it will last for 8 days..

More days it can last =

8 - 6 = 2

→ therefore , it will last 2 more days if 18 athletes are absent.

Answer:

2 days

Step-by-step explanation:

Athletes            Days

72          ⇒              6

(72-18)54        ⇒    x

Equation which is formed is,

72*6 = 54x

432/54=x

x=8

So, for finding the extra days,

8-6=2
