Here is a reference that might make it very easy to understand. When swimming in a pool or the ocean you will feel very little pressure when you put your head underwater. But dive down just 10 feet or so and the pressure increases noticeably. Twenty feet and you can really feel the pressure increase.
And that’s in a medium that doesn’t compress that much compared to the atmosphere.
The atmosphere is very much the same. He higher you climb the less the pressure.
In fact, by the time an aircraft has climbed to just 18,000 feet, it’s above one-half of the earth’s atmosphere
