At present the age of son is 3/8 his father's age.if 12 years ago the sum of their ages was 42 years.what is present age of father

Given : Present age of son is  $\dfrac{3}{8}$ of his father's age and 12 years ago the sum of their ages was 42 years.

To Find : Present Age of the Father.

Solution :

Let the present Age of the father = 8$x$

∴ present age of the son = $\dfrac{3}{8}$  of father's age =   $\dfrac{3}{8}$  of  8$x$

                                         =  $\dfrac{3}{8}$  ×  8$x$ = 3$x$

Now, 12 years ago the sum of their ages was 42 years.

∴  (8$x$ - 12) + (3$x$ - 12) = 42

     11$x$ = 42 + 24

∴  11$x$ = 66

∴  $x$ = $\dfrac{66}{11}$  

      $x$ = 6

Present age of father =  8$x$ = 8 × 6 = 48 years.

So the present age of father is 48 years.
