At present the age of son is 3/8 his father's age.if 12 years ago the sum of their ages was 42 years.what is present age of father

Given : Present age of son is  \dfrac{3}{8} of his father's age and 12 years ago the sum of their ages was 42 years.

To Find : Present Age of the Father.

Solution :

Let the present Age of the father = 8x

∴ present age of the son = \dfrac{3}{8}  of father's age =   \dfrac{3}{8}  of  8x

                                         =  \dfrac{3}{8}  ×  8x = 3x

Now, 12 years ago the sum of their ages was 42 years.

∴  (8x - 12) + (3x - 12) = 42

     11x = 42 + 24

∴  11x = 66

∴  x = \dfrac{66}{11}  

      x = 6

Present age of father =  8x = 8 × 6 = 48 years.

So the present age of father is 48 years.
