Going to take the organometallic approach. There are certainly other ways to do this.
To get methane:
CH3-I + Mg + H2O → CH4 (Water would protonate the Grignard reagent).
To get Ethane
CH3-I + 2Li/THF → CH3-Li + LiI
CH3-Li + CH3-I → CH3-CH3 + LiI
To get methane:
