Water has the highest density at a temperature of 4 C, so at this temperature a certain amount of mass of water will occupy the smallest volume. Unlike most other substances, the density of water does not continuously increase with decreasing temperature and as such, solid water (ice) is less dense than liquid water, unlike most substances.
