A clinical thermometer is a device that is used in medical setting to measure body temperatures.

The clinical thermometer has the different parts that help in its function:

i) The bulb - the bulb is the part of the thermometer that holds the liquid - such as the mercury. This liquid expands when it comes into contact with the body as the temperature rises.

ii) The capillary - this the part that the liquid in the thermometer flows through as it expands.

iii) The body - the body is the part that covers the capillary

iv) Scale - this is the calibration of the thermometer that indicates the temperature levels.

v) The valve/constrictor - this the narrowed part between the capillary and the bulb that prevent the liquid(mercury) from flowing back before a reading is made.

vi) Expansion compartment - this is the space in which the liquid and gases move into while they expand.

The red mark on the clinical thermometer is set on the 37° mark. This is essentially because 37 ° and there about is the normal range of body temperatures for a healthy person.  Temperatures above and below this mark (with a fair margin), may be  cause for further investigations.
