Karikala Chola ruled in southern India during the Sangam period. He is considered to be the greatest ruler of the Early Cholas. He raised the embankments on either sides of the river Kaveri to save the area from floods and to channelize the water.

He built the Grand Anicut, also called the Kallanai which is the oldest water-regulator or water diversion structure which is used even now. The Grand Anicut is a massive dam built of unhewn stone across the main stream of the river Kaveri. It is 20 metres wide and 329 metres long.

Karikala chola was the one of the famous ruler of the early cholas  and ruled Southern India . he raised the embankments on both sides of the river in order to divert the water of the river towards agricultural lands, so that it could be used as irrigation water . Moreover the primary purpose was to avoid the  flooding. This way he built first ever dam which was so large that it's length is upto 329 meter with the approximate  width of 20 meter.
