Mahatma Gandhiji was looking for new and innovative ways to unify the Indians and break the British rule. The Khilafat issue(Overthrowing of the Khalifa of the ottoman empire) offered him such a chance. This lead to the Khilafat/Non cooperation movement and hence this unified the major sects at that time, Hindus and Muslims.

As this was among the first major retaliations against the British by the Indians, it surely was a milestone and a historic one. As it unified the people for the specific cause of liberating the nation, it strengthened the national movement and gave the ordinary people courage and inspiration to overthrow the British.\

Hope it helped.
