Carbon belongs to the "fourteenth group" in the periodic table and period number "2".

It has an atomic number of 6. It is a tetravalent element and is very negligibly present in the atmosphere.

This is because most of elementary carbon is in reacted form of carbonates, bicarbonates, carbon dioxide, methane, etc. Under normal conditions it is very less reactive. It can be found in amorphous or crystalline state.
