Answer:

Explanation:

Metal A is Sodium (atomic number 11) while metal B is Magnesium(atomic no. 12)

Metal A has electronic configuration 2,8,1 , i.e. there is only 1 valence electron

Thus its valency is 1

Metal B has electronic configuration 2,8,2 , i.e. there are 2 valence electrons

Thus its valency is 2

HOW DO WE DETERMINE VALENCIES?

If the atom of an element has 1,2,3 no. of valence electrons , then its valency is exactly the same o. as its valence electrons.

Eg: Aluminium has 3 valence electrons , thus its valency is 3.

If the atom of an element has 5,6,7 nno. of valence electrons , then its valency is 8-n , where n is the no. of valence electrons.

Eg: Chlorine has 7 valence electrons , thus its valency is (8-7)=1.

WHAT IS VALENCY?

Valency is basically the combining power off an element which shows how reactive an element is.

For an atom which has only a single valence electron, this one valence electron is easily lost to form a positive ion.

An atom with 2 valence electrons is somewhat less reactive, because each atom must lose two valence electrons to form a positive ion.

Thus, Sodium or Metal A will be more reactive than Magnesium or Metal B.

Na (sodium) + HCl( Hydrochloric acid)-----> NaCl(Sodium chloride) + H2(hydrogen)

I hope this helps you! Kindly reply back if there's any problem with this answer! Have a great day!:D
