Within a period of elements, all electrons are added to the same shell. The valence electrons increase and are held closer towards the nucleus of the atom because of large positive charge on nucleus. As a result, the atomic radius decreases as the electrons come closer to the nucleus.

Answer:

because when moving from left to right more electrons are added to the shell and the nuclear change tends to pull electron towards it
