As we move from left to right in a period, the no of electrons in the outer shell of the atom increase, which results in increase in nuclear charge of the nucleus ,as the same no of protons are added to nucleas. This increases the force of attraction between nucleus and electrons in outer shell.
Due to this increased force ,the size of the atom shrinks towards the nucleus, and hence the size decreases…
hope this helps!!!

Explanation:
(i) Atomic radius is the distance between the centre
of the atom and its outmost shell.
(ii) Atomic radius decreases across a period.
(iii) This is because valence electrons are being added
to the same outermost shell or to the same energy
level because of which the electrons added
experience greater pull from the nucleus.
(iv) This results in the electrons moving closer to
the nucleus. Hence, the atomic radius goes on
decreasing while going from left to right in a period.
