Answer:

in period, the number of electrons increases along from going left to right in modern periodic table .this increases the attraction between neutrons and electrons.thus, decreasing the size of the atom.

in groups, the each new shell is acquired from going down.this increase the size of the atom, becoz the adding of every new shells tend larger the size.
