Atoms C and D form fcc crystalline structure. Atom C is present at the corners of the cube and D is at the faces of the cube. What is the formula of the compound? (CD₃)

CD3 because no. Of D are 1/2*6=3 and no. Of C = 1/8*8=1.

Formula of the compound will be CD₃.

Explaination -

Given that C (at corners) & D (at faces) form a FCC lattice.

Total atoms of C present per unit cell can be calculated as -

Atoms of C = 8 × 1/8

Atoms of C = 1

Total atoms of D present per unit cell can be calculated as -

Atoms of D = 6 × 1/2

Atoms of D = 3

Hence, Formula of the compound will be CD₃.
