Stephen Hawking was born on January 8, 1942, at the University town of Oxford, England, to Frank and Isobel Hawking. Perhaps it was merely a coincidence that the day happened to be the 300th death anniversary of Galileo Galilei, one of history’s great intellectual figures. Hawking’s father was a doctor who had become a specialist in tropical disease and his mother was secretary at a medical research Institute. After the war, the Hawking family moved to London and later in 1950 to St.Albans in Hertfordshire. Stephen was then eight years old. Frank Hawking wanted his eldest son to join Westminster, one of the best private schools in the country. But for this, he would have to sit for a scholarship examination, as the fees were too high, even for a successful medical researcher. But as the day of the exam arrived, Stephen fell ill and the opportunity was lost. He eventually studied at the St Albans School, which too, had an excellent academic record. As a boy, Stephen was somewhat awkward and eccentric, physically rather small and skinny. He spoke with a slight lisp, dubbed ‘Hawkingese’ by his peers but this had nothing to do with his later illness. His hobbies were bicycling, inventing and playing board games and tinkering with gadgets
