Helen was a great lover of nature. She was surprised at what mother earth had in store for everyone. Birds and animals were always a source of interest for her. She used to hunt for guinea-fowl's eggs in the long grass when she was a child but never allowed her friend Martha to carry the eggs home, in the fear that she might break them. In another incident, she gifted little Tim, a Canary as a Christmas gift by Tuscumbia School children. Miss Sullivan taught her how to take care of her new pet She prepared his bathe, made his cage clean and sweet, filled his cups with fresh seed and water from the well house and hung a spray of chickweed in his swing. She used to feed him candied cherries out of her hand but felt very sad when the bird fell a prey to a cat after its cage was left on a window sill. During her stay at Brewster, Miss Sullivan attracted her attention towards a great horseshoe crab. She felt it and found it strange that he carried his house on his back_ Suddenly she wanted to have it as her pet She seized it by the tail with both hands and carried it home. It's body was very heavy but somehow she dragged it and with the help of Miss Sullivan, put it in a trough near the well to keep it secure. But the next morning she found it missing. At first she felt disappointed but later felt happy that perhaps the crab had returned to the sea to which it belonged.

Mildred was an alert and observant child. Once they were at Fern Quarry. They went out to gather persimmons and got lost in woods. It started getting dark but they were unable to find their way back home. On the way, Mildred observed a trestle and realized that it was a short cut to their home. So, they all started walking on that path. Suddenly, she saw a train moving towards them. She alerted Helen and both of them were lucky enough to climb down in time. The train zoomed past them. Anne was a shy girl who had no friends with whom she could share her secrets. She wrote everything about herself—her desires, wishes and her secrets in Kitty—her diary which confirmed that she was a girl having the same secret desires which any common girl has. But since she was shy, she didn't share them with anyone. She admitted that she lived a contradictory life and the life of a split personality. She was kind, thoughtful and caring towards her family and friends but even then couldn't reveal the better part of her life to them. Whosoever came in contact with her, termed her as arrogant, spoilt etc. whether it was Mrs. Van Daan or Mr. Dussel. That's' why she was constantly compared to Margot who was a very humble kind of girl. She was good at studies and an obedient girl as well Anne didn't like this at all. She rather detested this comparison with her sister Margot. She wanted to live her life without being compared to anyone even if it was her sister. She wanted to lead a life which was free from judgment.
