He got 40. He failed by 80. So, the passing marks are 40+80=120.

The student needs 120 to pass. But passing marks are 40% of total.

Therefore, total marks = 120/40% = 120/0.4 = 300

hope it helps.

Answer:

1200

Step-by-step explanation:

40.5 percent = 486 then 1 percent = 486/40.5

So, 100 percent = 486/40.5×100=1200

ANS. 1200
