Ausable was playing a trick on his visitor

Explanation:

  • The "Midnight Visitor" by Robert Arthur is a story about a detective defying the stereotype, as we are familiar from novels and films. In more respects than one, Ausable differed from most secret agents. In a rundown French hotel, he had a little room in a moldy corridor.
  • Ausable was a overweight man of short height with a "thick accent". Ausable spoke "French & German" passably  that too with an American accent, even though he has been living in Paris for over 20 years. He makes appointments through telephone calls rather than getting messages slipped into hands secretly from his  secret messengers (like we see in detective movies)
  • A young writer named Fowler goes to visit him to get his next plot or book ideas. But the young writer, was  very disappointed to see a Ausable as a detective.  When Fowler and Ausable enters  the room, an intruder named Max who was another secret agent was already present in his room.
  • Max threatens Ausable with a gun  to handover some important documents. Ausable, "being quite normal", "plays  a trick" on Max. He uses his deftness and quick wits and makes a story of a "non-existent balcony" & "policemen". The fear of police makes Max jump out of the window and crash at the ground.
