Australia is covered on all sides by water bodies. So it is called an island continent. Africa is also covered on all side by water bodies but it is not called an island continent. Why?

Australia is called as an island continent as It is covered with water on all the sides.But Africa is not called as an island continent even though it is covered by water in all the sides.
Africa and usually some other continents are not islands because they continues discrete masses of land that are typically surrounded by masses of water bodies.
