Open-field system, basic community organization of cultivation in European agriculturefor 2,000 years or more. Its best-known medieval form consisted of three elements: individual peasant holdings in the form of strips scattered among the different fields; crop rotation; and common grazing. Crop rotation was by the two-field system (q.v.) in the earlier age and by the three-field system (q.v.) in the later centuries; in either case some of the commonly held fields were always fallow and used for common grazing.
