I am a banyan tree, tall and imposing, standing in the Botanical Garden. I am the oldest of the oldest. I belong to the celebrity trees in the world. I am now over 250 years old. And in spread it is the largest in India, perhaps in Asia. There is no clear of mine, but i am mentioned in some travel books of the nineteenth century. People call me the Great Banyan Tree. Botanically I am known as “Ficus Benghalensis” and belonging to the family ”Moracea”. My Location is now in ‘Acharya Jagadish Chandra Bose Indian Botanical Garden, Howrah, near Kolkata in India. I am the oldest tree in the world in terms of the area of the canopy and estimated to be about 200 to 250 years old. I became diseased after I was struck by lighting . So, in 1925 the middle of mine was excised to keep the remainder healthy. Befour 1925 I was damaged to the attack of hard fungus. With my large number of aerial roots, I look more like forest than an individoul tree. I now live without my main trunk, which decayed and was removed in 1925. The circumference of the original trunk was 1.7 M and from the ground was 15.7 M. The area occupied by nie is about 14500 square mt. The present crown of mine has a circumference of about kilometer and my highest branch rises to about 25 m; I have at present 3300 aerial rootsreaching down to the ground. A 330 m long road was built around my circumference. I continue to spread beyond it. However, I of the Indian Botanical Garden attract millions of visitors every year.
