Answer:

The Writers' Building was designed by Thomas Lyon in 1777 for the British East India Company. In 1821 a 128 ft-long verandah with Ionic columns, each 32 ft high, were added on the first and second floors. From 1889 to 1906 two new blocks were added, approached by iron staircases that are still in use.

Autobiography of Writers’ building

1777 A.D is an important year in my life. It is the year of my birth. My creator Thomas Lyon designed me on behalf of the British East India Company. As years grew  so did I. For example in 1821 I was extended in height and gifted a long veranda with  the iconic columns.

Over the years more blocks were added and from a caterpillar I metamorphosed into and elegant Greco-Roman building touched with a brick red hue glorified by a grand portico.

Slowly I grew into an architect’s pride. I was revered by all the buildings around me. I became the home of  innumerable offices and business dens. The company made me the house of their writers- the junior clerks.

Colleges ran inside my big rooms and I was a place full of hustle and bustle. My walls picked up so many languages spoken by the boarders of my room.

The most historical moment that I remember was when the three young Bengali patriots shot dead the notorious Inspector General of Police, Colonel N.S. Simpson. My inside corridor was splashed with the colour of my external hue.

His death marked me as a house of men as well as the phantom of Simpson.

By 1947 I had a new look with a large courtyard along with seven blocks. I was no longer a possession of the British. I was now a proud memento for the Indians.

By now I had a royal look with exquisite statues such as the  four clusters of statues, christened 'Justice', 'Commerce', 'Science' and 'Agriculture', representing the  Greek gods and goddesses Zeus, Hermes, Athena and Demeter and also the Minerva.

Indian administration gave me an increased importance. I became the office of the Chief Minister. Since then I have been further extended.

I have tried to serve the needs of everyone. But with time I am fast aging. I no longer have the strength and vigour of yesteryears. Right at the moment I am under medical treatment of architecture. The doctors of engineering are treating me with care and affection.

The people of Kolkata come to pay their respects and gaze at me with loving and affectionate eyes. I am the pride of the City of Joy and I shall forever try to retain it.
