Mariners hanged the albatross around the neck of the ancient mariner as a symbol of penance. After the ancient mariner shot the albatross with his crossbow, all the crew members started suffering a lot. first they were caught in the silent ocean and then they all started to starve with hunger. To save themselves from the spirit of albatross they hanged the dead body ( carcass ) of the albatross around the neck of the ancient mariner to show that the mariner was now feeling guilty about the death of albatross and now he wanted to forgive them all.
