Since autotrophs are independent on organic matter and can make their food by there own from inorganic sources, they occupy the base of the food chain which is called first trophic or nutritional level with herbivores and carnivores also omnivores, occupying the second and third trophic levels.

They prepare their food by using light energy, water, and carbon dioxide.

Instead of using energy from the sun, some l use also chemical energy to make their food.
