avg= (sum of obs/heights)/no. of students

let sum of heights of students be x

so, x/40=155

=> x=155×40=6200

but later it was discovered that the student's height was 137

:.now 157-137=20cm

new avg= (x-20)/40=155-20

=>x-20=5400

=>x=5420

now the sum of heights of students= 6200-5420=780
