[B] (i) The narrator wanted to get a match because he wanted to light a candle to see what exactly happened to his car's engine so that he could repair it or get some help. He asked a decent and ordinary-looking man for the match who was passing by him.

(ii) The man couldn't find the match in his waistcoat because he didn't usually wore this waistcoat. So they assumed for a moment that the match would be inside his other waistcoat which he usually wore.

(iii) After throwing down his walking stick, the man said that his son was a very naughty boy, who always kept destroying the contents of his pockets. He also said that perhaps he won't harm his son since the match could be there somewhere in his hip-pocket.

(iv) The narrator requested that if this wasn't the man's waistcoat, he should probably stop searching anymore for the match. He said that the man should probably let it go.

(v) The man finally gave a grunt of exultation because he thought that he have at last found the match, but instead it was a toothpick. The result of his exultation was fruitless since he just found a toothpick rather than a match. It was basically all for nothing.

[C] The man was decent and ordinary-looking, which was why he agreed to help the narrator.

He wanted to help the narrator at any costs, so he even put his parcels & other things on the pavement, so that he could search his pockets for the match. He even searched his pockets inside out to find the match. He also cursed his son in front of the narrator, because he was doubting that his son must have rummaged through his pockets & everything inside the pockets must have fallen down. Even in the end, he couldn't find the match after searching all over his pockets, which was very unfortunate.
