Cultivation of Rice
Rice is both a staple crop and food for most of the Indian population
- Rice requires an average of 150 cm rainfall annually.
- It is the major 'Kharif'(autumn) crop grown in about 1/4th of our country.
- From the time of sowing to the time of harvesting, rice needs an average temperature of 24 degrees.
- During early stages of plantation, rice needs 10-12 cm of standing water.
- Requirement for standing water does not imply that rice cannot be grown in hilly areas. In fact it is cultivated on a large scale, in the hills, using 'terrace farming' method.
