1 . An important character of the cork is that it is water and gas resistant. Therefore the following would occur if cork fails to form in older stems and roots: -The stems and roots would be subjected to dehydration because the cork, being water resistant, usually protects the plants from loss of water.

2. If the lymph is not returned back to the blood it would accumulate in the nearby tissues causing them to swell. When blood flows through the capillaries due to low pressure, there is leaking of water and proteins to the surrounding which is collected by the lymphatic system in the form of lymph.
