1/2(m1u1²) +1/2 (m2u2²)= 1/2(m1v1²)+1/2(m2v2²) + loss

keeping loss at rhs bringing everything else to.lhs we get

1/2m1(u1²-v1²) + 1/2(u2²-v2²) = loss

basically energy must be conserved. so energy must be same.before and after the collision any difference in kinetic energy is considered loss(sound or heat)

I assume no change of height and hence no change in potential energy.
