1. Parallels and Meridians

Parallels :

  • Parallels Are Lines of Latitude
  • There are 180 parallels of latitudes apart from the Equator.
  • All parallels are not of equal length.
  • Parallels don’t intersect.

Meridians :

  • Meridians Are Lines of Longitude.
  • There are total 360 Meridians.
  • All meridians converge at the poles and are thus of equal length.
  • All meridians intersect at two places; the North Pole and the South Pole.

2. Great Circle and Small Circle

Great Circle :

  • A Great Circle is a circle which is drawn on the Earth’s surface in such a way that the center point of the Earth and the Great Circle is the same.
  • The radius of the Great Circle is equal to the radius of the Earth.
  • All the Great Circles divide the Earth into two equal halves.
  • All meridians of longitude are Great Circles.

Small Circle :

  • The Small Circles are the circles whose center point is not the center of the Earth.
  • The radii of the Small Circles are smaller than the radius of the Earth.
  • All latitudes except the Equator are Small Circles.
