It is true lack of access to basic amenities including food and shelter as well as lack of proper socialization can lead a person to become an antisocial element. The peddler was leading a lonely life without family and home. This loneliness made him a beggar and thief.  

However, when he came in contact with Edla, he was transformed by her caring, respectful, and loving behavior. He decided to turn a new leaf in his life.  

If he had his family since beginning, he would never have become a thief.
