Let the first number be x and the second number be y

So the numbers are:- x, 18, y

They are in continued proportion, so their ratio is same.

ie, x/18 = 18/y

xy = 18×18

xy = 324..........(1)

Their product is 324 and the sum is 39

x + y = 39

x = 39 - y........ (2)

Substituting (2) in (1),

(39 - y) × y = 324

39y - y² = 324

y² - 39y + 324 = 0

y² - 12y - 27y + 324 = 0

y(y - 12) - 27(y - 12) = 0

(y - 12)(y - 27) = 0

y = 12 or y = 27

When y = 12,

x = 39 - 12 = 27

x = 27

y = 12

When y = 27,

x = 39 - 27 = 12

x = 12

y = 27
