in the poem, the mother is a typical indian mother who has selfless love for her children.
When she is relieved she thanks god to protect her children. She also puts her life in the hands of superstitious villagers.

The poem “Night of the Scorpion” is about a night in which the mother of the poet was stung by a scorpion. The mother cried in pain for the whole night. Different people held different opinions for the incident. Some said that it was a curse of the mother for the wrongs which she did in her last life. After the pain was over the other day, the mother thanked God for choosing her to undergo the pain and sparing her children from it. The mother in the poem is the portrayal of the Indian mothers who choose themselves to endure pain before their children.
