Character Sketch of Mr Van Daan :

Mr Hermann Van Daan was a business associate of Mr Otto Frank. He was formerly in the meat and sausage business. His family also lived into hiding with Mr Frank's family. On July 13, 1942 ,he along with his family entered the hiding place on only a week after the Franks.Mr Van Daan is rarely mentioned by Anne Frank in her diary except when he was fighting with his wife or trying to pacify her. So we don't get much knowledge about him. However from the fights of the Van Daan couple we get the impression that there was no love left between Mr Van Daan and his wife. They were always Cross with each other. Their frequent fights usually spoiled the Atmosphere of the Secret Annexe. Mr Van Daan seem to be a stereotypical hen - pecked husband at some places but he never gave his wife that care and love which every wife has the right of. Perhaps that was Mrs Van Daan felt attracted towards other men. Anne considered Mr Van Daan to be and unbearable know - it- all though she reserved the most of her wrath for his wife , Mrs Van Daan .Mr Van Daan died in the gas chambers at Auschwitz in 1944.
