The seeds of democracy started in prehistoric times beginning with kingless societies. Without a king or single all powerful individual, such societies had collective issues that had to be resolved and choose to form assemblies to address things that affect all members in the group. Probably the idea of an assembly came from the way families decided collective issues - all members of the family had equal say as to what makes them happy because no one has the time to police other members and still do their own jobs - there had to be a consensus. The family concept could be expanded to a clan of families and even to larger groups of clans until the numbers became difficult to manage; after which people decided to choose representatives or to disenfranchise members in order to create a manageable group size for the assemblies. The Greeks were the first to assign a name to kingless assemblies which they called democracy and later refined some of its characteristics by philosophical analysis. The Romans also recognized kingless assemblies but called theirs res publica or republics.
