The poem cold within is a parable about the things that separate us. Talking about the background of the poem it describes a situation in which six human being are caught. They happen to be trapped in dark and bitter cold. They need to keep themselves warm in order to survive. Each one has a stick of wood ,which could be used to keep the fire burning. It was a critical situation. But the reason for their unification was unknown.
