Festivals of all varieties can be a lot of fun. I’m an Urban Planning Consultant in my professional life. But, in my down time, I love pursuing photography. Festivals are always full of colorful individuals and lively spirits — the photo opportunities are endless! As Marilynne Rapp said in her response to your question, “parties are good for the soul.”
But what is the effect of a festival on the environment? This question is a bit loaded. The effect of a festival on the environment lies more with the aftereffect. As we all know, festivals are typically large congregations of many, many people. Especially in areas where camping out overnight is to be expected, there are a lot of opportunities for waste production and littering when there are a large number of people maintained within one area.
If proper cleanup routines are not put in place directly after the event or festival, the effect on the environment will, of course, be negative. But if the festival attendees are respectful enough to pick up after themselves, then there will not be much of a negative effect. As long as cleanup crews are set in place, the environment will be safe!
I’m all about sustainability and protecting the natural world. It is our duty as human beings to respect the environment. As long as that respect is given and maintained, I don’t see why a festival would have a negative effect on the environment.
OR
Festival to be looked upon as community managed event rather than managed by event managers as commercial activity and must be celebrated locally with local talent, wisdoms with environmental friendly green manners to keep minimum adverse effect on human footprints

Not sure what that means? But I will say this. Living life is allowed. Parties are good for the soul, the economy, and if properly cleaned up afterwards, don't damage the environment. All creatures leave a footprint. Should we consider that our exhaling also impact the environment? Thre are far more REAL issues in the world than silly brooding about cultures celebrating life. If you truly are worried about the environment, question the impact of WAR instead of happiness.
