Baking powder is added while preparing cake.cake obtained,what is the reason for this

Baking powder is a mixture of sodium hydrogen carbonate(baking soda) and a mild edible acid such as tartaric acid. When sodium hydrogen carbonate is heated it releases carbon dioxide. This leads to rising of the cake mixture and ultimately results in its fluffy nature.
