Add baking soda(NaHCO3) in water. Dissolve it properly. Then take red litmus paper and dip a part of it in the solution. You will observe that the red colour changes to blue. And this conversion from red litmus to blue indicate the presence of basic nature.

If you take the blue litmus paper then colour will not change. Colour remains bue .
