Balancing the chemical reaction

To balance the chemical reaction, the no. of atoms on the reactants should be equal to the no. of atoms on the product side .

  • The process of making the number of different types of atoms equal on both the sides of an equation is called balancing of equation.

  • The simple equations are balanced by hit and trial method.

Why we balance Chemical reaction ?

The chemical reaction should be balance to satisfy the law of conservation of mass.

According to this law, the mass of atom neither be destroyed nor be created. In a chemical reaction only rearrangement of atoms takes place.

Now,

\underline{\bf{Let's \:  balance \: the \: given \: equations  \:in  \:the \: above \: question  \: :}}

Hydrogen combines with chlorine to form hydrogen chloride.

\:\:\:\:\:\:\:\:\:\:\:\:\:\:\sf H(g)+Cl_2(g) {\longrightarrow} \sf 2HCl(g)

In this reaction H and \sf Cl_2 are reactants whereas 2HCl is the product. Let us count the number of H atoms and Cl atoms in the reactants and products.

The number of Cl atoms are equal in both side but the number of Hydrogen atom is unequal. There are 1 Hydrogen atom on the reactant side but 2 atoms in the product side. To have 2 atoms on the left side, we multiply H with 2.

No. of H atoms : ⠀⠀2⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀2

No. of C atoms : ⠀⠀2⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀2

\:\:\:\:\:\:\:\:\:\:\:\:\:\:\sf 2H(g)+Cl_2(g) {\longrightarrow} \sf 2HCl(g)

Here, two elements , hydrogen and chlorine, react together to form a single compound, hydrogen chloride gas. So, this an example of combination reaction. This combination reaction is used in industry for the manufacture of hydrochloric acid (Hydrogen chloride gas on dissolving in water forms hydrochloric acid ).

Hence, It is Combination Reaction.

Those decomposition reactions which are carried out by using electricity is called Electrolytic reaction.

When electric current is passed through acidified water, it decomposes to give hydrogen gas and oxygen gas. This reaction can be represented as :

\:\:\:\:\:\:\:\:\:\:\:\:\:\:\sf 2H_2O(l) {\longrightarrow} \sf 2H_2(g)+O_2(g)

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀In Reactants⠀⠀Products

No. of H atoms : ⠀⠀2⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀2

No. of O atoms : ⠀⠀2⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀2

So, In this reaction a single compound, water, splits up to form two simpler substances, hydrogen and oxygen. This decomposition reaction takes place by the action of electricity. It is called electrolysis of water.

Hence, This reaction is Decomposition reaction.
