Al2O3•xH20 + 2NaOH → 2NaAlO2 + (X + 1 )H2O

The resulting sodium aluminate is then rehydrolysed back to hydrated aluminium oxide.

2NaAlO2 + 2H2O — > 2NaOH + Al2O3•3H20

After calcining the trihydrate alumina in rotary kilns or on fluidised beds, the alumina is then reduced to aluminium in an electrolytic cell known as the Hall-Héroult Process.

2Al2O3 + 3C — > 4Al + 3CO2
