Hydrochloric acid & sodium carbonate react to produce sodium chloride, carbon dioxide and water. Brisk effervescence are seen due to carbon dioxide gas formation. The balanced chemical reaction is as follows:

   2 HCl +  Na2CO3  =  2NaCl + CO2 + H2O
