A bar chart or bar graph is a chart or graph that presents categorical data with rectangular bars with heights or lengths proportional to the values that they represent. The bars can be plotted vertically or horizontally. Wikipedia

shauryamanjaisdij: To draw a pie chart, we need to represent each part of the data as a proportion of 360, because there are 360 degrees in a circle. For example, if 55 out of 270 vehicles are vans, we will represent this on the circle as a segment with an angle of: (55/270) x 360 = 73 degrees.

A bar diagram is used to compare many things between various groups. It is also used to track changes over a period of time.

Anyway, when we try to see changes over a period of time, bar graphs may be the best when the happening changes are bigger in nature.

Comparatively, a pie chart is best for using while trying to compare different parts of a complete aspect. It does not show all the changes that happen over time.
