Answer:

It took 29 minutes and 15 seconds for barbara to reach her office.

Step-by-step explanation:

  • The formula of Time, Speed, and Distance is

⇒  Time = \frac{Distance}{Speed}

  • Given, Half a mile at a speed of 8 miles per hour.

Therefore time taken to cover the distance will be

⇒ Time(1) = \frac{0.5}{8} hour    -------------------------Eq.1

  • Now Remaining distance is 9.5 miles (10-0.5) and is covered at a speed of 40 miles per hour.

⇒ Time(2) = \frac{9.5}{40} hour  --------------------------Eq.2

Adding Eq.1 and Eq.2 we get the total time taken by barbara to reach her office,

⇒ Total time = Time (1) + Time (2)

⇒ Total time = (\frac{0.5}{8} + \frac{9.5}{40} ) hours

⇒ Total time = 0.4875 hours or 29.25 minutes

Therefore total time taken by barbara to reach her office will be 29 minutes and 15 seconds.
