Baseball in Asia

A. The Saitama Seibu Lions, the Samsung Lions, the Tianjin Lions and the Uni President 7-Eleven Lions...The Hanwha Eagles, the Tohoku Rakuten Golden Eagles and the Shanghai Golden Eagles... the Chiba Lotte Marines and the Lotte Giants... These are names of some of the many professional baseball teams in East Asia. In Korea, in Taiwan, in Japan and increasingly in China, baseball attracts huge followings and is a huge if sometimes money-losing business. And in quality of play Asian baseball takes a back seat to no one.

B. Asian stars in North America's MLB (major league baseball) leagues have shown that Asian players can individually compete with the best of American and Latin American players. In 2004, Japan's Ichiro Suzuki, playing for the Seattle Mariners, broke one of baseball's oldest records, George Sisler's 84- year - old record for the most hits in a single season. Ichiro also holds the record for the most hits by any player over a four year period. And in 2009 another Japanese player, Hideki 'Godzilla' Matsui of the New York Yankees, was the MVP (most valuable player) in the World Series. He hit .615, had three home runs and eight RBIs (runs batted in) over the six game series, which New York won four games to two. Hideo Nomo of Japan, Daisuke 'Dice - K' Matsuzaka of Japan, Chien-Ming Wang of Taiwan and Chan Ho Park of South Korea are other Asian players who have excelled in the major leagues.

C. Asian baseball players have also shown their best players can compete and excel as teams against the best players from other countries. The World Baseball Classic is a series held every three years. In this series national teams of professional baseball players compete against each other. The first Classic was held in 2006. The second was held in 2009. Japan won the first two series and in the second series, the Japanese team narrowly defeated the team from South Korea for the championship after losing to South Korea earlier in the series.

D. Six Asian countries have national leagues. The oldest is Japan's Nippon Professional Baseball, which has its origins in the formation of the All Japan Tokyo Baseball Club in 1934. Currently there are 12 baseball teams in the NPB in two leagues, the Pacific League and the Central League. South Korea's Korea Baseball Organization is the second oldest. It was founded in 1982. There are currently eight teams. Taiwan's Chinese Professional Baseball League, founded in 1989, is the smallest of the leagues at four teams. Similar to the practice in Japan's NPB and Korea's KBO, the teams are all owned by and named after large companies. The most recently founded of the professional leagues, China's China Baseball League, started in 2002 and currently has seven teams. There are also baseball leagues in operation in Malaysia and in the Philippines.

E. But while Asia has many club teams playing within nation-based leagues there has only been limited play between clubs based in different countries in tournaments such as the Asia Series. Will we ever see a pan-Asian league in which the best of Asian players play against each other on Asiabased teams? Will we ever have a situation where the Chiba Lotte Marines and the Lotte Giants can face each other in regular league play?
