Antonio and Bassanio were very good friends . Antonio was a very rich merchant while Bassanio wasted all his money in luxurious things . He didn't have money to go to Belmont in order to woo Portia so he wanted money . Though Antonio didn't have money he still took a debt from Shylock on the condition that he would give his pound of flesh to him if he is unable to repay the debt
