I was traveling in a passenger train which was passing through a dense forest in a tribal area. I was feeling a bit lonely. On my front seat sat an old man wrapped in an old grey shawl. After some hesitation, I asked him where he was going. Perhaps he, too, wanted to pass his time. So, we fell into a long conversation. I came to know that, once, he was an engine driver on the same route. But he left the job just a year before his retirement. I wanted to know why he left the job when no one would normally do so.
He saw me watching him closely. Then, he burst into a long soliloquy. What he told me was startling. He told when he used to run the engine on this line, he said the rustics in those days were too stupid. They believed that wherever the train stopped, there was a station. Many of them had lost their lives while stepping down in a hurry. Then the authorities issued an order banning the stopping of trains on the bridge, come what may.
One day he saw a young man walking leisurely on the track of the bridge. He repeatedly whistled to alert the man. The man saw the engine rumbling towards him. He got so confused that he raised his hands and began to shout : "Stop the engine! Stop the engine! Do you want to kill me ?" As Ram Lal could not stop the train, he tried his best to make the man clear out. But the stupid fellow could not even think of coming out of the track to let the train pass. He started running in a frenzy. But then the inevitable happened. Ram Lal saw one part of his severed body falling into the river. He stopped at the nearby station and reported the matter. He felt as if he had murdered the young man. Everybody tried to convince him but he could not remove the image of the tragic end of the youth. So, he submitted his resignation and went to his village to spend his last days, tending his small field.
I saw Ram Lal lost in his thoughts. He did not try to resume his conversation. Nor did I.
