The character that I
admire most in O Henry’s short story A Night Out is Marian. This is because although
she is from an affluent background, she does not like flaunting her wealth.
Marian likes to be a normal middle-class person. This can be seen from the way
her attire is described when she accidentally bumps into Chandler and hurts
herself. Also, she is of the opinion that a person must have an occupation
irrespective of if he is rich or poor. She is quite open about this view and
does not hesitate to express the same. She prefers a person who lives life with
his earnings as her life partner. When she asks Chandler what he does, he
replies that he does not work as he is rich. This makes Marian not interested
in him. She tells her sister she cannot love a rich man like Chandler who is
jobless although he is kind and attractive.
