There are different factors on which animal possess their respiratory organs. Following are some example:

  • Some animal breathe through their plasma membrane. It happens In unicellular organisms. For example amoeba absorbs the oxygen from the surrounding air and give out carbon dioxide by diffusion.
  • Organisms like earthworms, leeches and tapeworms breathe through their skin. They have very thin and moistened skin which has blood cells spread all over it. These blood cells are known as capillaries and they die if their skin gets dried up.
  • Insects like cockroaches and grasshoppers have a tube called trachea. They exchange gas with the help of this tracheal system.
  • Aquatic animals like prawns and fish have special organs to breath in water known as gills. 'Gills' are projections of the skin that extract dissolved oxygen from the water.
