Robert Clive bribed Mir Jafar, the commander in chief of the Nawab's army, and also promised him to make him Nawab of Bengal. He defeated the Nawab at Plassey in 1757 and captured Calcutta. The battle was preceded by the attack on British-controlled Calcutta by Nawab Siraj-ud-daulah and the Black Hole massacre.

The battle of plessey is an important landmark in the history of India. On 23rd june 1757 the armies of Siraj-ud-Daulah and thd English East India Company met at Murshidabad, British forces led by Robert Clive and Mir Jafar. Mir Jafar betrayed the Nawab and supported the Clive.

As a consequence of this Siraj-Ud-Daulah lost the battle and was captured and killed. Mir Jafar rewarded and was the made the Nawab of Bengal by the Company.
